July 6, 2010 Stephen Iacoboni, MD, a Board-certified (in medical oncology and internal medicine) medical oncologist, has joined Kennewick General Hospital and is presently working in the Spaulding medical office building (on the hospital campus), to offer patients in the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas treatment options for cancer and cancer-related disorders. Dr. Iacoboni (pronounced yăk-ŭ-bō-nē) was born in Lynwood, California, and raised in Lakewood, California, and recently relocated back to Washington from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He completed medical school at the University of California in San Francisco, School of Medicine in 1979. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and followed with a Fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Texas/M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston. The friendly and gregarious physician is committed to integrating oncology services to patients over 18 years of age. “Our first step is to start with various hematology and oncology services, including in-house administration of chemotherapy,” says Dr. Iacoboni. “Then we will continue to add services until we reach our goal of being a full-service, comprehensive cancer program in Kennewick. I want to be sure that we integrate our oncology services with those offered at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center, so that patients are provided with another medical option for their care.” KGH’s new oncology services will provide innovative treatments and technologies, offering patients a special combination of dedicated experts, state-of-the-art treatments, new approaches, compassionate care … and hope. With a team approach to cancer care, patients will be provided the most effective treatment regimens. “We believe it is important to expand our scope of services and bring the Tri-Cities more medical choices that focus on the patient who, in the case of cancer-related disorders, must struggle against a life-threatening illness,” says Glen Marshall, Chief Executive Officer and Superintendant for Kennewick General Hospital and Kennewick Public Hospital District. “Moving forward, our new oncology services team will have the ability not only to treat patients today, but also to create ways to treat tomorrow’s patients even better. This all begins with talented minds, such as Dr. Iacoboni’s, immersed in treatment options and the advancing world of cancer care.” Patients can now make appointments with Dr. Iacoboni in Kennewick at 900 S. Auburn Street in the Spaulding medical office building, Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. “My passion is helping patients and their families to better deal with cancer,” says Dr. Iacoboni. “While the physical health aspect of a patient is important and vital, we will also focus on the emotional consequences of their treatments and quality of life. Today’s cancer treatments are complex, intricate and sometimes surprising in their subtleties. Quite often, patients need to be guided through a maze of decisions and choices, and as healthcare givers, we must always remember that we can’t cure the body at expense of destroying the soul.” As the Medical Director of the Kootenai Cancer Center in north Idaho, Dr. Iacoboni has been integral in developing several community outreach programs there over the past nine years. His patient-centered, holistic and individual approach to treating patients with cancer are the driving elements that will help Dr. Iacoboni grow KGH’s hematology and oncology services in the Columbia Basin. He is not new to southeastern Washington, however. Prior to his leadership position in north Idaho, Dr. Iacoboni was co-founder of the (now) Providence St. Mary Regional Cancer Center in Walla Walla, Washington. He now returns to the Tri-Cities in a leadership role to develop that premier level of care for cancer patients and their families. Dr. Iacoboni has also served on many medical committees, published peer-reviewed articles and been the recipient of several awards. “As our area continues to grow, the demand for skilled physicians is also growing. Dr. Iacoboni will tremendously help KGH, and the communities we serve, to meet the area’s required medical needs,” states Marshall. “Dr. Iacoboni has the skill and personality to help our oncology program launch, grow and to help many patients who require cancer care.” Dr. Iacoboni is fluent in English and conversational Spanish. Patients can now schedule an appointment to see him by calling 509.585.2449. |
